Insecure Ts

McPhail’s insecureTs blend craft, textiles and performance in a compelling and blatant expression of personal strife. Words like REJECT and FLUNKEE are hand-sewn in glittering sequins by McPhail onto black Tshirts. Over 50 of these shirts are available for the general public to try on and wear throughout the festival.

Andrew McPhail was born in Calgary Alberta in 1961 and studied at York University where he received his MFA in 1987. His accumulative, craft oriented work reconfigures disposable materials such as Band-Aids and Kleenex into large sculpture and installations, often accompanied by a performance element. In the past few years his work has focused on issues surrounding his HIV status.

Produced by the University of Waterloo Art Gallery and the University of Waterloo Department of Fine Arts.
