CAFKA.16 | What we do together that we can't do alone

Location: 152 King Street West, Kitchener, 8:30 - 11 PM

Lisa Birke's Bombshell for CAFKA.16 played with the cinematic cliché of the hero passively walking away from a deadly explosion transpiring in the background. Usually a stoic and emotionless male, our hero has been replaced in “BOMBSHELL” by a sequence of female stereotypes: the fairy, the bitch, the house wife, the milk maid, who all seem to materialize out of a relentless sequence of explosions. Bombshell was performed, filmed and edited by Lisa Birke.

Kitchener-based artist Lisa Birke received an MFA with distinction from the University of Waterloo (2013), where she held the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Master’s Scholarship and the University of Waterloo President’s Graduate Scholarship.  Recently, she was a keynote artist at the Sounds Like Audio Art Festival in Saskatoon, she performed at CAFKA (Contemporary Art Forum Kitchener and Area, 2014) and her work will be presented at the National Art Centre’s “Ontario Scene Festival”, at SAW Video Media Art Centre in Ottawa (Canada) in the spring of 2015. “Red carpet” was awarded the “Lakehead Juror's Prize” and the “Audience Choice Award” at the Orillia Museum of Art & History in Orillia (Canada) in 2014.
