This collaborative sculptural installation is called THROUGH. The monumentality of City Hall serves as a backdrop for our playful, make-shift sculpture. THROUGH is a 20 x 20ft maze-like structure that is designed as an interactive space for both children and adults. The bulk of the structural walls are constructed from collected wooden industrial palettes that have been reassembled to form maze-like passageways and rooms within the structure. Nostalgic sounds of children guide the viewer through the architectural space. The structure houses sculptural objects that evoke thoughts of childhood, gender, memory and play. The adventurous of heart will walk and find their way through the maze, while others can stand back and experience the structure as a purely sculptural form.
Michael Jacob Ambedian and Sheila McMath met in Winsdor, Ontario in 1993 and began collaborating on joint projects in 1999 while completing their MFA degrees at the University of Waterloo. They have exhibited across the province and in the United States. With strong links to traditional processes each brings individual characteristics to works that explore the intersection of nature and culture, nostalgia, and material sensibility.
