Events

Between biennials, CAFKA is very active producing and co-producing a number of special events.  CAFKA’s events are intended to facilitate connections between people, to introduce our organization to the community and to initiate a critical dialogue around the issues of contemporary art in public spaces.

CAFKA produces a bi-annual video cabaret we affectionately call "I Heart Video Art," a social event around the presentation of some of the most interesting and lively examples of contemporary video art.  CAFKA also participates in community arts initiatives such as the Steel Rails Sessions and FEST 3, where a number of cultural organizations collaborate to create memorable cross-disciplinary events.

Artist/activist Steve Lambert will lead a two-day workshop where local residents will gather and develop unique content to produce a crowd-sourced wiki for the city of Kitchener.

Local “wikis” are web-based city guides that reflect the quality and character of a community, as told by its residents. Local wikis can provide advertising-free local information – from town history to what restaurants are open late, etc. Mr. Lambert will lead a two-evening workshop on local wikis where participants will gather and add unique content. .

The workshop will start with a short introduction to how local wikis work. Participants will conduct field research by touring the city and collecting information about favourite places to take friends, insider tips, and popular spots. After the field research phase of the workshop the group will return to the Critical Media Lab for a writing party and celebrate the beginning of the project. After the two-day workshop the site will be publicly launched and open to new contributors.
